HOW MUCH LEATHER DO I NEED TO COVER MY COUCH?
In order to know how many hides you will need to buy, have this in mind:
- A cow hide = approx 4.75 square metres of leather
- 1.75 square metres of leather is needed for every square metre of fabric
Let’s assume you want to cover a 3 seater couch. First check how many metres of fabric is needed to cover them.
3 Seater Couch = Approx 16 metres of fabric needed (width approx 145cm) So, 16 metres of fabric is needed to upholster the 3 seater couch.
Now, you need to determine the area of leather required to cover the couch:
16 metres of fabric x 1.75 sqm of leather = 28 sqm of leather
Now let’s find out the number of hides:
Again, each hide is about 4.75 sq. metres of leather, so the final formula you need is this:
28sqm of leather needed, divided by 4.75 (per hide) = approx 6 hides are required
Additionally, you would want to add 10-20% extra to accommodate any flaws or unusable sections of the hide.
That brings you closer to 7 hides in total.
